Villa Holberg is located in the heart of the city of Salzburg on one of the central city mountains. The city centre and main sights are within walking distance, as are the green parks, boulevards and conservation areas in the south of the city.
If you walk along the path down from the house, you’ll reach a pass. Keep heading north and go to the left then you’ll reach the Neutor in five minutes. Go through it and you’ll find yourself back in the old town, directly by the horse pond and festival theatre, and not far from pleasant cafes, excellent restaurants, beautiful churches, winding alleyways, impressive museums, and traditional or trendy shops. There’s a fruit & vegetable market on the university square every day. The Saturday market is particularly worth a visit as that’s when the farmers bring their freshly harvested specialties into the city.
The rehearsal stage of the state theatre, located in one of the ancient caverns of the „Rainberg“, can easily be reached on foot in just a few minutes.
Not far away from the foot of the Rainberg, there’s a supermarket on Neutorstraße where you’ll find (almost) everything you need for cooking and your daily needs.
If you feel like enjoying the surrounding nature on a
long walk , simply follow the path down to the right and towards the south. The Untersberg awaits you from this direction and, at the foot of the Rainberg, you can wander through a small zoo towards Leopoldskron pond and castle. There you’ll find a range of beautiful paths and dreamy trails, also along the Almbach, where you can relax and enjoy the natural environment. Jogging enthusiasts can indulge in their hobby on the Hellbrunner Allee near to Leopoldskron pond, which takes you to Hellbrunn castle with its parks and gardens. This is particularly recommended in the morning and evening.
It’s also well worth taking an
excursion to Nonntal with its small shops via the historical „Krauthügel“ and past old villas, along the Festungsberg.
From there you can continue across the Nonnberg with its wonderful views of the time-honoured
Nonnberg Abbey, which you may recognise from the „Sound of Music“. You can then return to the old town and complete the tour that will take you „back home“ to the Rainberg.
